The Hope & Anchor in Grimsby has reopened following a £216,338 investment by Proper Pubs, the community wet-led division of Admiral Taverns.

Located on Victoria Street, the pub officially reopened on Wednesday 14 October 2026 after undergoing a refurbishment designed to improve its facilities and strengthen its role within the local community.
The investment has introduced a refurbished bar area, new seating, upgraded lighting, flooring and televisions throughout the property.
The interior layout has also been opened up to improve movement and accessibility within the venue, creating additional space for customers to socialise.
Outside, the beer garden has been refreshed with new furniture, while the pub’s exterior has received updated decoration and signage.
The Hope & Anchor forms part of Proper Pubs, which operates more than 200 community pubs across England, Scotland and Wales.
The refurbished venue is led by operator Darren Smith, who brings hospitality experience and local knowledge to the business.
Smith intends to develop the pub as a meeting place for residents, with a programme of entertainment and activities designed to encourage regular visits.
Commenting on the reopening, Smith said: “The reaction from the local community so far has been incredibly positive.”
He also thanked customers and the Proper Pubs team for their support during the refurbishment and reopening.
The pub’s drinks offering includes premium draught lagers, stouts and ciders, alongside spirits and soft drinks.
A regular entertainment programme is planned, including live music, karaoke, quiz nights, pool and darts teams.
Smith also intends to introduce community fundraising activities, including collecting food donations for a local foodbank and supporting other causes in the Grimsby area.
Matthew Gurney, Operations Director for Proper Pubs, welcomed the reopening and thanked Smith and his team for their work in bringing the refurbished venue back into operation.
The investment forms part of Admiral Taverns’ ongoing programme of improvements across its community pub estate.
The group recently announced plans to increase capital investment to £38.4 million during its 2027 financial year, supporting refurbishment and development projects across its leased and tenanted and operator-managed divisions.
Alongside its property investment, Proper Pubs runs community fundraising initiatives across its estate.
During Easter 2026, its operators collected 21,619 Easter eggs for local charities, while fundraising activities in 2025 raised £80,255 for Admiral Taverns’ charity partner, Claire House Hospice.
The reopening of The Hope & Anchor represents another investment in the Proper Pubs estate, combining improved facilities with a programme of entertainment and community activities.
