The Derby in South Shields has reopened following a £322,923 investment, with the refurbishment introducing improvements to its sports facilities, interior and outdoor areas.

Located on Prince Edward Road, the pub officially reopened on Thursday 29 October 2026 and forms part of Proper Pubs, the community wet-led operator division of Admiral Taverns, which operates more than 200 pubs across England, Scotland and Wales.
The pub is operated by Gary Thorius, who has managed the venue for 15 years and has extensive experience in the hospitality industry.
Thorius is also actively involved in the pub’s sporting activities, serving as Secretary of the darts league and participating in its pool competitions.
The refurbishment has included a complete programme of interior redecoration, new furniture and upgraded dartboard facilities designed to support league competitions.
Outside, the pub has received new seating, signage and decoration, providing additional facilities for customers and community events.
The improvements will support the pub’s established sporting activities, which currently include 17 darts teams, four pool teams and a football team.
The venue offers a selection of draught lagers, stouts and ciders, alongside spirits and soft drinks.
Gary Thorius, Operator of The Derby, said:
“It was fantastic to see people making the most of all the reopening events we had on last week, and seeing new and old faces coming into the pub. The refurbishment has given the Derby a fresh new look and the new viewing options for our sports lovers will really enhance their experience.
“Admiral’s expertise was very valuable throughout the process, and the team understood what the pub needed to offer the community. From the outset, the aim was to create a top-tier sports pub which gives customers a fantastic experience when watching sport.”
The reopened pub will host a regular entertainment programme, including live music, televised sport and horse racing, darts and pool competitions, a games club, karaoke and quiz nights.
Community bingo sessions will also take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 1pm, providing further opportunities for local residents to meet and socialise.
Alongside its entertainment offering, Thorius plans to introduce food collections for a local foodbank and support charitable causes including Paws for Thoughts, Heal & Toe and SURT children’s charity.
The pub also intends to encourage community fundraising towards installing a publicly accessible defibrillator outside the premises.
Nikki Greenhalgh, Operations Director for Proper Pubs, said:
“The refurbishment at the Derby looks fantastic and it has been a pleasure to work in partnership with Gary to bring this to life. The opening events were a great success and I have no doubt that will all his enthusiasm and expertise Gary will continue to make a success of the pub.
“Bringing people together and creating vibrant community hubs is at the heart of what we do, and we are so glad to see another successful community pub opening.”
The investment forms part of Proper Pubs’ ongoing refurbishment programme and its wider approach to supporting local communities.
During Easter 2026, Proper Pubs collected 21,619 Easter eggs for donation to local charities. In 2025, operators collected 20,500 Christmas selection boxes for communities in need and raised £80,255 for Admiral Taverns’ charity partner, Claire House Hospice.
The company also reports that food donations collected across its estate during 2025 provided enough supplies to feed 1,300 people for a week.
Proper Pubs has additionally supported a nationwide defibrillator installation campaign which, according to the company, has helped save 11 lives.
The business was named a finalist in the Best Community Pub category at the Great British Publican Awards 2026, following its recognition as Community Pub Operator at the Publican Awards in 2024.
The reopening of The Derby represents further investment in the Proper Pubs estate, combining upgraded sporting and entertainment facilities with community activities and local fundraising initiatives.
