The historic Mount Royal Hotel Edinburgh has finalised its transition to The Unlimited Collection, following completed renovations, bringing a new era of locally inspired hospitality to the heart of the Scottish capital.

The hotel’s newly renovated 169 rooms have been influenced by vintage travel and the rich textures of Scotland’s landscape and literature. Designed by Bell&Swift, the rooms feature leather detailing and metalwork reminiscent of traditional travel chests, with patterned fabrics combining soft natural tones with vibrant accents, a nod to the historic train carriages. This distinctive design offers guests a blend of heritage and contemporary comfort.
The hotel is the 7th property globally under The Unlimited Collection, a growing portfolio of culturally rich, one-of-a-kind hotels with presence in Dublin, Vietnam, and Singapore. Each property is carefully selected for its unique story and strong connection to its surroundings, with Mount Royal Hotel and its refurbished restaurant reflecting the unique spirit and charm of Edinburgh through its design, location and signature touches.
Located on Princes Street, the hotel offers unparalleled access to Edinburgh’s most celebrated landmarks, including Edinburgh Castle and the Royal Mile. Just a short walk from Waverley Station and a 30-minute drive from Edinburgh Airport, it provides a convenient base for both business travellers and leisure guests, with the added appeal of nearby coastal escapes such as Portobello Beach.
As part of The Unlimited Collection, Mount Royal Hotel Edinburgh will introduce a series of culturally inspired experiences that immerse guests in the traditions and spirit of Scotland. Locally rooted touches range from Scottish poetry left on pillows, to a bagpiper greeting guests at the entrance, with the General Manager even leading a traditional Haggis Address.
The new restaurant and bar, Eidyn, runs an evening ritual, Amber Hour, at 6:30pm, offering complimentary haggis and whisky-flavoured popcorn, alongside seasonal welcome drinks such as a Princes St Garden Party in summer.
Food and beverage experiences will also reflect Edinburgh’s reputation for craftsmanship and creativity. Guests can enjoy whisky and gin masterclasses under the banner “Edinburghology,” learn from visiting mixologists, or sample local favourites such as the Scottish Spritz. The hotel will also be introducing an innovative signature ritual, named “say aye to the pie” – savoury and sweet pies take center stage alongside expertly paired drinks.
The connection to Scottish culture extends beyond the hotel walls, with curated excursions including Highland hikes and tours, kilt fittings, and seasonal picnics in the city’s gardens. The hotel U-Shop showcases artisan products, alongside landscape sketches by local artists and other locally crafted treasures.
Billy Hughes, Area General Manager UK&IRE at The Ascott Limited, said: “Mount Royal Hotel Edinburgh completing its transition to The Unlimited Collection marks an exciting new chapter for both the hotel and the city. By becoming part of this curated portfolio, the property can offer guests experiences that are deeply inspired by Edinburgh’s culture, traditions, and vibrant heritage, alongside the exceptional service standards The Ascott Limited is known for.”
“Unveiling the hotel’s new look and feel, and unique immersive offering, is an exciting milestone for Mount Royal Hotel Edinburgh,” said James Fraser, General Manager. “We’re bringing the city’s culture, history, and creativity to life in every corner of the hotel, from our design and dining experiences to curated local excursions. Our goal is to offer guests a stay that is unmistakably Edinburgh, with moments they’ll remember long after they leave.”
As a member of The Unlimited Collection, Mount Royal Hotel Edinburgh guests can also enjoy exclusive privileges through Ascott Star Rewards (ASR), the group’s loyalty programme that enhances every stay with tailored experiences and special benefits.
Following the recent addition of Temple Bar Hotel in Dublin, the inclusion of Mount Royal Hotel Edinburgh underscores The Ascott Limited’s ongoing commitment to expanding The Unlimited Collection with premium, locally rooted properties in key cultural destinations across the UK and Ireland.
