An emotional and short-notice Muscle Dream collaboration in partnership with Rudding Park Hotel near Harrogate (Yorkshire) and the Muscle Help Foundation (MHF) charity based in Hampshire delivered a VIP birthday celebration reminding everyone in the room what memory-making service looks like and how the power of hospitality can be transformative.
When time is precious, the smallest acts of care and kindness can mean the world. For David, a 13-year-old living with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) and significant cardiac complications, his birthday this year on Sunday 10th May was never going to be “just” another birthday. It was a chance to create a memory bright enough to carry a family through the hardest days ahead.
Emma Lowe, Senior Nurse (Salford Care Organisation) at the Children’s Community Nursing Team, a part of the Northern Care Alliance NHS Group reached out to MHF on 22 April 2026 asking if the charity could help make ‘some more amazing memories’ for David (and his family).
“They talk all of the time of David’s Gaming Muscle Dream experience which the charity delivered back in November 2024 at the Hilton Manchester Deansgate Hotel. They wear their Muscle Warrior wristbands with so much pride and joy! I just wanted to know if you could touch base and provide some additional support for the family at this very difficult time,” wrote Emma.
David’s cardiology team were approached to ask whether he would be fit enough to travel. Just as soon as MHF had confirmation, the birthday event planning wheels went into overdrive.
“Before arriving at Rudding Park where David’s covert birthday treat was to take place, I knew the family had spent a few days at Derian House in Chorley (Lancashire), a children’s hospice that provides respite and end-of-life care”, said MHF’s founder and CEO Michael McGrath MBE.
The MHF charity is best known for turning often very tough moments-in-time into lasting cherished memories through its ‘Muscle Dream’ interventions, giving vulnerable children, young people and adults (8-35yrs) living with the muscle-wasting condition Muscular Dystrophy, and the families who unconditionally care 24/7, precious memories to hold on to.

COULD SOMETHING SPECIAL BE DONE FOR DAVID’S 13TH BIRTHDAY?
With Emma’s question ‘could something special be done for David’s 13th birthday’ in mind, and with an urgency, communications moved quickly, suppliers committed at pace, and the all-important need to maintain the element of surprise, a plan formed around one place known by MHF’s CEO not only for its relaxed luxury, warm Yorkshire hospitality and its lovely location but also from the hotels insight of the charity’s work drawn from their support of its ‘HOPE ON A PLATE: Meatballs for Muscular Dystrophy’ fundraising initiative.
Set in 300 acres of beautifully landscaped gardens and woodland, the family-owned resort offers 90 bedrooms and suites, a destination spa, three restaurants including Michelin-starred FIFTY TWO, a kitchen garden, a private cinema, two golf courses, and extensive conference and events space. It’s a property built for special occasions, yet what followed was special for a very different reason.
“Taking into careful consideration the distance from David’s home, I knew that Rudding Park Hotel would be the perfect venue for this one-off Muscle Dream mission. Over and above the relaxing setting, they have a private 14-seat cinema, apparently the smallest and most luxurious in Harrogate – this was an important part of the birthday surprise,” added McGrath.
MHF knew that David’s favourite film was ‘SpongeBob Square Pants The Movie (2004) so the charity bought the triple film pack thinking he won’t have seen all three hilarious movie adventures! He had. The new ‘Michael’ (2026) movie just released portraying the life and legacy of Michael Jackson was also up there. In the end, the American animated adventure comedy-drama film Toy Story 3 was unanimously voted by David and his family.

ARRIVAL: SUNSHINE, A WARM WELCOME, AND THE FIRST SURPRISE
David and his family arrived in glorious sunshine to a wonderful greeting from the hotel’s concierge team that included Richard from Concierge and Joseph from Guest Relations. From the first moment, every interaction with VIP guest David and his family felt calm, unhurried, and totally focused on making everyone feel welcome and at ease.
THE JUPITER ROOM: PERSONALISED DETAILS DONE BRILLIANTLY
David together with his family were personally escorted by an entourage from the hotel to the beautifully prepared Jupiter Room. Balloons donated by WOW Your Event included a huge arcade-style set-up, with a bold number “13”, a balloon gaming console, and presents from the charity waiting to be opened. There was a gaming-themed fleece birthday blanket with uplifting words of encouragement designed to make the milestone feel truly David’s. A gifted bouquet of flowers was presented to David’s mum Nike, and on hand professional photographer Tim Hardy who kindly donated his time captured the atmosphere that included a family photo shoot.
The celebration was made even more meaningful when the Managing Director of Rudding Park, Matthew Mackaness MRICS, joined the group accompanied by his wife Jessica and their son William, to personally welcome David and wish him a happy birthday, one of those gestures that turns outstanding hospitality into something unforgettable. Rudding Park is owned and operated by the Mackaness family, who acquired the estate in 1972 and who today run the luxury hotel.
YORKSHIRE COMFORT FOOD (AND A ROOM FULL OF SMILES)
Welcome refreshments were followed by a feast of freshly made wood-fired Neapolitan pizza cooked in the new 2026 outdoor kitchen on the magnificent Clocktower Terrace and the classic Yorkshire burger with fries, enjoyed together in the Jupiter Room.
“It was fantastic of Rudding Park to get behind and support the event through their ‘Giving Something Back’ initiative. The atmosphere was super relaxed, and the combination of great food, friendly service, most notably Amreen from Events who was outstanding and who contributed selflessly in helping make the magic happen, always with the spotlight firmly on David and his family”, commented MHF’s CEO.
PRIVATE CINEMA SCREENING: TOY STORY 3, POPCORN & STRAWBERRY ICE CREAM
Then came a highlight that felt like pure magic. A private cinema experience complete with popcorn and strawberry ice cream, with Toy Story 3 on the big screen. Midway through the afternoon screening, David was heard saying, “Mum, I’d love to come back here for my 16th birthday.”
13TH BIRTHDAY CAKE REVEALED: A TOTAL SURPRISE
Back in the Jupiter Room for more refreshments, the hotel delivered another perfectly timed surprise. A beautiful birthday cake, carried in by several members of Rudding Park’s kitchen brigade including some of the hotels chefs to the memorable tune of “Happy Birthday” thanks to Stevie Wonder being belted out over the in-room audio system. Everyone joined in and the candles were blown out by David.
“The staff’s energy was palpable. The genuine warmth and smiles from everyone present lifted the whole celebration to another level. It was a party vibe with dancing. There was a lot of love and a lot of joy in the room! I know that the family will remember this moment with warm hearts and as for David, well his precious expressions and smiles said it all. I cannot thank Rudding Park Hotel enough for supporting this memory-making Muscle Dream”, added McGrath.
“THANK YOU… FOR THIS BLESSING”
On departure, David thanked MHF’s CEO, saying: “Thank you Michael for this blessing.”
A NOTE FROM NIKE AJAYI, DAVID’S MUM
“I just want to say a huge thank you for the incredible support you have given me, David and family over the years. Your kindness, care, and understanding meant more than words can truly express. Since David has been out of hospital until this very moment, your support has made a positive difference in our family, especially knowing we have people who genuinely care beside us. It has brought comfort, strength, stability and hope when we need it most.
We are indeed grateful for everything, Michael, for everything you do, not just for us but for so many families across the UK who need this support and the magic you always put together. The work you do is truly amazing. We will never forget the difference you have made in David’s life”.
A HAPPY HOTELIER
“We were so happy to welcome David and his family for his special 13th birthday event at Rudding Park and for them all to mark the occasion and make memories together – smiles all round. We love a surprise at Rudding and the surprises for David on the day just kept unfolding! Thank you to Michael and the Muscle Help Foundation charity.” Matthew Mackaness, Managing Director, Rudding Park.
THE UNFORGETTABLE GIFT THAT IS HOSPITALITY
For those working across the hospitality industry, David’s Muscle Dream experience is a reminder that human to human connection can be compelling and profound. Hospitality has always been about service, attention, empathy, and teams willing to go above and beyond in not just meeting but exceeding guest expectations. Rudding Park’s ability to deliver that in spade loads at such short notice, with discretion, and with a heartfelt and real warmth, gave one family an unforgettable and precious pocket of time.
