By Denis Sheehan FIH: Promoting Digital Inclusion: Designed specifically for people with disabilities.
Promoting Digital Inclusion is a video from Dorset charity The Crumbs Project to further boost employability and life-skills amongst adults living with disabilities.
Promoting Digital Inclusion addresses a crucial need through providing tailored digital skills training to adults with disabilities, empowering them with the tools they need to succeed at work in the hospitality industry and opening up opportunities to thrive in many different aspects of their lives.
Research by Lloyds Banking Group has found more than 30% of people with impairments or disabilities do not have even the most basic digital skills.
The Crumbs Project is bridging the divide by providing dedicated digital skills training for adults with disabilities enrolled in their hospitality based training and development programmes.
Through their first digitally focused video entitled ‘Promoting Digital Inclusion,’ the charity is sharing details of the tools and techniques they use to help their trainees to develop the digital skills they need for employability and independence.
Janet Miller, as The Crumbs Project’s Digital Skills Trainer, has played a pivotal role in advancing digital inclusion among the adults the charity supports. Her dedication and expertise have been instrumental in developing a specialised programme comprising nine digital skills training units specifically designed to be accessible for people with learning disabilities.
Miller explained to us saying: “We provide tailored digital skills training for adults between the ages of 18 – 70 with diverse backgrounds and learning support needs. Our training is delivered through 1 -2 – 1 sessions, group training sessions, and our own specially designed eLearning modules. By taking a person-centred approach, we’re able to support each individual to develop the digital skills they specifically need to live more independently, and we also have a lot of fun interacting with a variety of digital tools and media.”
With funding support from Good Things Foundation with the financial backing of JP Morgan, the digital skills training programme at The Crumbs Project has already been proven to be effective.
Since the charity began their digital transformation and digital skills training programme design in 2022, over 40 adults have been supported to become more digitally included. This work has specifically focused on helping adults with disabilities to improve their employability and financial health.
By leveraging digital technologies, trainees at The Crumbs Project can access a wide range of opportunities that may have previously been inaccessible. This initiative not only fosters professional growth but also promotes independence and inclusion in various aspects of daily life.
